Holland wooden shoe land
About 600 years ago the Dutch use wooden shoes as one of the first. Why especially in Holland? The Dutch country-side is for a great part situated below sea-level. This means that farmers always had to work on a very damp soil and had tog row their corps in heavy clay. Rubber boots didn’t exist yet and wood was the ideal material to use as it is water resistant. It was easy to go with lots of trees around which made it even cheaper. Untill the 1930’s wooden shoes were only made by hand. Then machines took over this heavy labour for mass-production. As a traditional craft wooden shoes are still being made by hand. In a friendly atmosphere you also find a beautiful collection of Delft Blue, Dutch pewter and carved wood works.
